AMIkids Inc. Welcomes Dr. Brenda Birkett, National Board Chair
Dr. Birkett will serve a two-year term on the volunteer national board
AMIkids Inc., a nationally-recognized, nonprofit organization that transforms troubled youth into responsible members of our communities, is proud to welcome Dr. Brenda Birkett as the new National Board Chair for the organization.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Birkett leading our national Board for the next two years,” said Michael Thornton, CEO & President, AMIkids. “Her professional experience and accomplishments, along with her numerous volunteer endeavors, gives her a unique perspective as a she helps guide our mission of inspiring at-risk youth to find their potential.”
Dr. Birkett is the retired Dean of the College of Business and Professor of Accounting at McNeese State University. Previously, she held the positions of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College of Business, Director of the School of Accountancy and Professor of Accounting at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dr. Birkett holds the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Accounting from Louisiana State University, the Master of Business Administration degree from Atlanta University and the bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Southern University and A&M College. She is an inactive Certified Public Accountant in Louisiana.
“I am humbled by this opportunity and I look forward to the great challenges ahead,” said Dr. Brenda Birkett, National Board Chair, AMIkids. “For nearly 50 years, AMIkids has helped hundreds of thousands of at-risk youth improve their lives. As board chair, I intend to support this incredibly important work by providing my guidance and insight to create the most impact.”
Prior to her career in academia, Dr. Birkett was an internal auditor with the Internal Revenue Service in Atlanta, Georgia and a general accountant with Western Publishing Company in Poughkeepsie, New York. Dr. Birkett has received several awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award for Accounting Education from the Louisiana Society of Certified Public Accountants and the National Achievement Award in Accounting Education from the National Association of Black Accountants. In 1998, the Baton Rouge Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants established the Brenda S. Birkett Endowed Scholarship Fund at Southern University. She has published in numerous journals including Issues in Accounting Education, Southwestern Economic Review, The Southern Collegiate Accountant and the Mid-American Journal of Business. In addition, she is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants, the Louisiana Society of CPAs and the National Association of Black Accountants.
