AMIkids Inc. Awarded $4.5 Million U.S. DOL Grant

TAMPA, Fla., August 7, 2019 – AMIkids Inc., a national nonprofit organization that has been transforming troubled youth into responsible members of the community for more than 50 years, is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $4.5 Million U.S. Department of Labor Reentry Projects grant. This program will serve 600 18-24 year-olds over a 2-year period in the following counties: Pinellas, Lee, Escambia, Dade, and Bay County. 

The program will begin in October 2019, offering nationally-accredited construction and culinary vocational certification, as well as GED preparation and job placement services.  to those individuals involved in the juvenile justice system and/or adult justice system or a high school dropout.

A first-of-its-kind program, the Reentry Projects Grant will produce immediately employable candidates in the construction and culinary trades.  Candidates will range between 18 and 24 years old (men and women) in at least one of the qualifying categories:  a.) in the juvenile justice system at some point in the past; b.) youth released from adult incarceration within the past six months; or c.) youth without a high school diploma.

The purpose of the funding is to engage participants in pro-social opportunities, such as education, nationally certified vocational training within in-demand industries, and employment opportunities through workforce preparation and placement.

“Our Vocational Education & Job Placement Programming is an essential part of the services we provide our youth, as it gives them more choices to finding a brighter tomorrow,” says Michael Thornton, President & CEO, AMIkids Inc. “This grant will allow us to expand these services and reach even more at-risk youth across Florida.”
